Our Mission & Coaching Philosophy

Mission

Maryland Legacy Field Hockey Club is a BRAND NEW youth field hockey program (K - 12th) in Frederick County, MD.

Maryland Legacy FHC believes in using athletics as an avenue to developing great people. Our mission is to teach youth athletes valuable life lessons - hard work, dedication, confidence, perseverance, leadership, selflessness, coachability - and the list goes on!

We believe that athletes NEED to experience struggles in order to learn, grow and become something great! And, there’s no better way to struggle and learn these lessons than in the safe environment of youth sports. We want all of our athletes to succeed on the field and, more importantly, in life.

Coaching Philosophy

Our goal is to build a Complete Athlete by teaching, developing and emphasizing three qualities that we call the “Athlete Trifecta.” Each athlete needs to develop overall athleticism, improve their mindset, and constantly be willing to grow their on-the-field hockey IQ. The Athlete Trifecta is a continual work in progress. By spending time on developing each of these areas, we believe each athlete will be able to reach their full field hockey potential.

Building the Athlete

Overall athleticism and knowing how to move our body through space is an important aspect of an athlete’s game. Our goal is to help our athletes become strong, fast and dynamic. We want to help them become more confident and competitive on the field. Moving well with good mechanics will not only enhance our sports performance, but also reduce sports related injuries.

Coach Kelly is a Crossfit Level 1 Trainer and co-owner of Lion’s Den Strength & Conditioning. Coach Kelly believes it is important to incorporate strength and conditioning, as well as speed and agility training, into our practices and every day lives. In order to move like an athlete on the FH field, we first need to learn how to properly move our bodies off the field and in the gym!

Developing the Hockey IQ

With our bodies strong and our minds sharp, now we need to focus our efforts on our FH skills and overall game knowledge. Our coaches will emphasize individual skills, so that our players are continuously improving their fundamental FH skills and stick work. The coaches will also incorporate team concepts and dynamics, game play, field awareness and overall field vision.

In order to be successful and confident athletes on the field, we believe in creating an environment where our athletes feel comfortable trying new skills and learning new concepts.

Field hockey is a game of mistakes - don’t be afraid to try something new and fight back if it all goes wrong!

Sharpening the Mindset

Does your athlete have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset?

The inner dialogue and how an athlete talks to themselves plays a major role in how well they play on the field. (Hint-hint: how a parent talks to the athlete also plays a huge role in their confidence!)

Improving our mindset is a constant work-in-progress. But, if we want to take our game to another level and improve our overall quality of life, mindset training is something we need to continuously practice on a daily basis.

What is your inner coach saying? Hopefully, that you’re an unstoppable force with so much FH potential!
